If you’re trying to make it as a model and haven’t yet been signed to an agency, it’d certainly be worth sitting down and taking a look at your portfolio as well as how you comport yourself to see if there are any improvements that could be made to maximise your chances. Here are a few tips to help get you started.
Be prepared
Don’t just start knocking on doors and expect agencies to snap you up. It’s an incredibly competitive business and you should expect to be turned away more often than not. But you can give yourself a leg up by having a strong modelling portfolio in hand to show people, as well as a good well-produced composite card.
Be early
If you get an appointment or are attending an open call, don’t just show up as the open call is ending. Make sure you’re there at least 15 minutes early so you can really make a good first impression.
Dress simply
Don’t show up looking like a fashion victim. You need the agents to see you for what you are, so dress simply in plain clothes. You should also make sure you wear nude underwear in case they want you to model something that’s sheer or see-through.
Don’t wear jewellery
By the same token, keep your accessories to a minimum so the agents can see you and not what you’re wearing.
Smile and be confident
The secret to your success isn’t just being an astounding clothes horse. You need the personality to match, so make sure confidence radiates out of you, that you smile and that you’re personable – but not too over the top!
